YUMI THE MOVIE

Changed the second scene of Yumi in Love. Worked out a great set piece, the kind of thing that will challenge the actor playing Thomas...but actors are a brave and artful bunch. I can't wait to shoot this.

After January 2nd, the push toward production begins with casting. I'll be sending out sides during the first couple weeks of January. Casting!

Rob from Obsolete Films lent me "Imaginary Heroes" as a way of exploring how mistakes can be made. It was a pretty bad film as far as the writing/directing, and the fact that this type of ham-fisted sentimentality is what the multiplex audience considers "moving" is a bit depressing. On the other hand, it's good to see that you can still make 'small' dramatic films. The flawed "All the Real Girls" was a similar thing, although it was much better than Imaginary Heroes (and Garden State)...but it is good to see these types of films peppering the cinematic landscape. Looking forward to MATCH POINT, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, DEAR WENDY...and more...

Take a chance on Yumi!

YUMI FALLS IN LOVE July 2006

November has provided inspiration. Not the month, but the Film. It's not that it was a particularily great film (Indigent has certainly produced some great ones), because it wasn't. It was good, but the affordable camera equipment (to buy or rent) is the real inspiration. The film looked great, even with the WAY overused Traffic-like filter effects.

Now, with affordable digital cameras capable of capturing a sexy image...it's all a matter of getting locations.

Locations, locations, locations...

MY FICTION WEBLOG

http://www.furthersignals.blogspot.com

As the film moves forward so does the novel...

THIS I KNOW

Mystic Pizza was better than Mystic River, but only because it had less cheese.

RECENT FILMS

The Squid and the Whale (amazingly amazing)
Palindromes (Pretty fantastic, Scary-funny)
Heights (could have used a little more "Full Frontal" or "Opening Night" and a little less "Garden State")
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith (Truly awful. Embarassingly horrible for filmmaker and viewer alike. The love scenes and the Darth Vader scenes make you long for Jar Jar Binks...seriously)

IN THE "TO WATCH" PILE
Tony Takitani
Three Times
Two or Three things I know About Her

CASTING

I'm putting the fundraising party on permanent hold...I would much rather cast a movie than organize a party and beg for money...the party may happen, but it will change form if that is the case.

You will be hearing from Yumi in Love casting folks (me) soon. You might think...Yumi...how long has it been...you're patience shall be rewarded with some good times, some good reads, and hopefully, some good coffee.

THE SQUID AND THE WHALE

This is perfect filmmaking. This is what could happen when a writer/director says "action". This is good. Makes me feel particularily inspired to shoot Yumi!

Casting begins as soon as it is 2006.

All the best to all of you!
